Thursday, December 8th, 2011
Before I start telling you about this place, first let me teach you
how to get there. It was a major problem for me to get to the Jong’s Crocodile Farm after visiting the Semenggoh Wildlife Centre for Orang Utan Rehabilitation
because there were no proper signboards to this place. They were not
listed on iPhone map too. From the Kuching City, it is roughly 30
kilometers away and should take you a 45minutes casual drive. From the
city, head towards the Kuching International Airport, you will see a
junction hearding towards Serian, follow this route. There are road signs that mentions the Jong’s Crocodile Farm, but they are separated miles apart. Then head towards Siburan,
the Farm is located on the 17th mile on this long stretch of road. It’s
kinda like a main road so do look out for the entrance on your left
when you reach the 17th mile in Siburan. You may also use the Sarawak Transport Company (STC) Bus No. 3A, boarding at Jalan Masjid Bus Station in Kuching City passes the Crocodile Farm and Zoo. It takes another 10 minutes walk from the main road to the Jong’s Crocodile Farm and Zoo.
Jong’s Crocodile Farm and Zoo is the first and the largest captive crocodile breeding farm in Malaysia have more than two thousand crocodile bred in captivity. It has been there since 1963 and is open daily from 9am till 5pm. Parking is fairly easy because they do provide free parking space. DO NOT miss the crocodile feeding time because that will be the highlight of your experience at Jong Crocodile Farm. This is when they do tricks with the crocodile forcing them to jump up to 2 meters high to get their piece of meal, which consist of fresh chicken and other meat. The crocodile feeding demonstration is held at 11am and 3pm daily.
As for the entrance fees, it is at RM16 per adult (regardless whether you’re Malaysian or a Foreigner) but there is a discount for those who are from Sarawak where they only pay RM10. Children get a 50% discount. May seem a little expensive, but trust me, it’s worth your money.
You’ll not only experience the Crocs and how they survive but you’ll get to meet the skeleton skull of a 19feet man-eating crocodile named “Bujang Senang“. The Jong’s Crocodile Farm and Zoo also homes many other animals including a couple Honey Bear, wild boars, wild cats, many types of birds, fishes, tortoise, snakes, otters, deer, own, eagles, porcupine, monitor lizards, and many more. There is also a feeding time for the Arapaima (a kind of fish) along with 15 other species of freshwater tropical fishes. You’ll experience face to face with this giant creatures in the ponds and experience nature. The Araipaima feeding demonstration is at 11.30am and 3.30pm daily.
Visitors can also take a rest here in the gondola that is strategically placed around the pond area. You will be exhausted because there are quite a distant to walk to cover the entire zoo. Do wear some comfortable foot wear as well as carry a bottle of water too. There is a drink store available at the entrance and also a Souvenir gallery at the end of your visit. You’ll also get to see more details and gallery at the Crocodile Museum. You should spend roughly 2 hours here at the Jong’s Crocodile Farm and Zoo.
